![]() The external vibration cannot be a cause, because the scanner sits on very stable table and I leave it alone while scanning. I am not sure if this is a hardware problem or software problem. Instead of removing dust, iSRD now adds more unnatural spots. Worse, normal and infra-red scan does not match up together. Software installation on Windows XP went very smoothly out of box, and I was amazed at the image quality with first 30 scans at 3600 dpi, after years of torture by cheap film scanners.Ĭons: After 3rd day of happy scanning, preview image begins to drop lower and lower in SilverFast window, cutting 5 - 10 % of lower part of image, and leaving big empty band above. Pros: I bought this for included SilverFast software and infra-red dust removal. ![]() ![]() Most of the orginal sleeves my negatives were in were no longer servicable. Once you start taking all these negatives out, you'll want some way to keep them organized and scratch free. The time for scanning with infared dust & scratch turned on is huge at 7200.Īlso, get yourself a set of negative handling gloves and some negative sleeves if you don't already have good sleeves. I decided to scan no higher than 3600dpi since i wasn't seeing much improvement in quality above that anyway. I think my results are good enough for at least 5X7 or 8X10 reproductions. Overall Review: You have to put in some time and research with the software before judging this machine. Not sure how much is the scanner and how much is the film. I'm knocking off one egg just for the fact that all my scans so far have needed a lot of noise filtering. I would like to have the same negatives scanned by a high-dollar nikon to see the difference. I did some reading on the interent to find out this was not unusual for scanning high ISO negatives. My scans were very grainy with a lot of noise until I learned how to correct most of it. Don't expect these images to match that of a decent digi camera. It took me quite a few scans and a late night to find what worked well for the individual film I was using (high speed, underexposed)Ĭons: I'm not sure if this is a con but you have to have reasonable expectations for scanning negatives. Knowing the software will make all the difference. I don't know how to use them all which I need to remedy. The software gives you tons of options for corrections. The negative holder hasn't been a hassle to use.Ĥ. I had no problem with the set up - hardware or software (XP Home). Color seems to match very well if you get the right film type selected in Negafix.ģ. I was glad I spend the extra money an the "i" model.Ģ. I've had some large scratches removed completely. The infrared dust and scratch removal works really well. I do see some additional hard drives in my future. The 3600 x 3600 dpi saves an excellent archival negative that is only around 50mb. Use the 7200 x 7200 dpi on only your ultimate shots. I am using Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate to use my archival tiff files to make the images I want to share. With the packages software and a good photo editing software it is all redeemable. You will find your negatives are likely already scratched and dusty enough that you don't need to add your oily fingerprints to them. Overall Review: Find a good pair of archival lint free gloves. ![]() It may take a little trial and error to understand the features of the software, but the scanner is pretty easy to operate directly out of the box. Somehow the software had set itself to settings that were giving me 1gb files and running batch. I considered buying a much higher priced unit, but seeing that I am not a professional photographer settled for this unit and am pleased with it completely.Ĭons: The full package software is working well with my Vista 64-bit Home Premium, but when I had an unexpected reboot it took a little while to get back to the workflow I was in. Although it takes a few minutes per image it is a great deal faster then processing images in a darkroom and waiting on each print to see if the balance and contrast are accurate. This is so much easier then working in the darkroom to find the image that you never got from the retail store developers. Going back over 30 years of negatives has renewed my interest in photography again. It made me wonder why I had waited so long to purchase a film scanner. Pros: Well made and comes with good software for converting your negatives and slides to high grade digital images. ![]()
